For day one of the Monster Girl Challenge, I present Henrietta the Happy Harpy!
Despite American Apparel’s recent description of plus sizes as “not our demographic”, they’ve recently held a competition to find a plus-size model who can be “the next BIG thing”. The new XL size is an American 12-14 - that’s a British 14-16, and America’s national average.
Nancy Upton decided to enter the competition on her own terms. “It just occurred to me that based on their ‘Hey, come on, fatties, we want you to play, too’ tone, wouldn’t it be kind of brilliant to respond in a, ‘Thanks for letting me play, just let me try put down the pizza, first’ similar mocking tone.”
She entered the competition with a series of satirical photographs showing her semi-naked and eating a variety of foods, captioned “I’m a size 12. I just can’t stop eating.”
Voting for the competition closed yesterday. The winner has yet to be announced - but it’s looking like it’s Nancy.
